The Wayne County Board of Canvassers in Michigan caused a national uproar on  Tuesday, Nov. 17, after they initially voted against certifying the results of the presidential election in the county. After several hours of heated exchanges and intimidation, the members of the board who voted against certification were forced to relent. The initial vote was two to two, with the four canvassers voting according to partisan lines. The two Republican members of the board did not want to certify the results because of their concerns regarding irregularities with absentee ballots. According to them, the poll books of 93 out of Detroit's 134 absentee counting boards had votes that did not match with the initial tallies in the books. “Based on what I saw and went through in poll books in this canvass, I believe that we do not have complete and accurate information in those poll books,” said Chairwoman Monica Palmer, one of the two Republicans who initially voted against certification. Local and national elected officials were well aware of the situation in Wayne County and weighed in on it. “Today's action is a blatant attempt to undermine the will of the voters,” said Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat. “The Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers put politics above their duty to our residents,” said socialist Rep. Rashida Tlaib on her Twitter account. John James, the GOP's U.S. Senate candidate for Michigan, who lost to the incumbent Democrat by just 1.5 percentage points, showered Palmer and her colleague, William Hartmann, with praise. James said that their objections to certification were highlighting inconvenient truths regarding irregularities in the vote-counting process. “Wow! Michigan just refused to certify the election results!” wrote President Donald Trump on Twitter. “Having courage is a beautiful thing. Republicans threatened into siding with the Democrats

Eventually, Palmer and Hartmann were forced to recast their votes in favor of the Democrats after the two liberal members of the board conceded to one of the Republicans' demands, which was for the Secretary of State's office to conduct a “comprehensive audit” of the precincts that did not have balanced vote tallies. However, just one day after the end of that controversial vote, the two Republicans on the Board of Canvassers now claimed in signed affidavits that they were forced to side with the Democrats. In the affidavit, Hartmann said that his main concern is the “unbalanced and unexplained” discrepancies with the absentee ballots. He voiced his concerns during the meeting but these were swept aside as supposedly being insignificant and a normal occurrence. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson even said that it was common for precincts to be out of balance “by a small number of votes.” “I voted not to certify,” said Hartmann in his affidavit, “and I still believe this vote should not be certified. Until these questions are addressed, I remain opposed to certification of the Wayne County results.” https://twitter.com/correctthemedia/status/1328918785504538627 “After the [initial] vote, the public comment period began and dozens of people made personal remarks against me and Mr. Hartmann,” said Palmer in her affidavit. “The comments made accusations of racism and threatened me and members of my family. The public comment continued for over two hours, and I felt pressured to continue the meeting without a break.” Palmer and Hartmann also claim that the Democrats and other state officials have indicated that they are not going to honor the compromise audit that they had agreed upon, which was what finally got the two Republicans to change their votes.
