Study: US has worst maternal mortality rate among developed nations

A study has found that the U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed nations, with 17 deaths per 100,000. In contrast, New Zealand, Norway and the Netherlands only have three or fewer maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births. The U.S. is also the only high-income nation where pregnancy-related deaths have been increasing rather than declining since 2000. Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tracked mothers' deaths, both short-term and longer-term. It looked into maternal deaths that occur within six weeks (42 days) of the end of pregnancy and deaths that occur up to a year after the end of pregnancy, some of which are referred to as "late maternal deaths." For both the short-term and longer-term measures, the cause may be "related to or aggravated by the pregnancy." In lower-income nations, hemorrhage, infections and delivery-related complications are some of the leading contributors to maternal mortality. But according to a recent CDC report that analyzed about 1,000 deaths from 36 states for the 2017-2019 period, the time frame before the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) policies and vaccines were rolled out, more than half of pregnancy-related deaths (53 percent) took place after delivery. This is anywhere from one week to one year postpartum. The report also highlighted mental health and cardiovascular conditions as the top two "underlying causes of pregnancy-related death," providing stark differences by race or ethnicity. This raised suspicions among analysts as to why there were no discussions of threats to the health of pregnant and postpartum women who got vaccinated during pregnancy. Critics are also pointing out why there was a rushed authorization of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women, which were only "based on an unreviewed study and unverifiable data." "If the agency wants to stop pregnant women and new moms from dying, a good start would be to halt all vaccination during pregnancy and take a cold, hard look at the pharmaceutical pill-pushing and other social-environmental factors that ensnare so many women trying to do right by their babies," the non-profit Children's Health Defense team said.

Alarming death rates also raise questions about US healthcare system and prenatal care

Apart from the possibility that the vaccines contributed to the alarming maternal mortality rates, analysts are also questioning the quality of prenatal care American moms are receiving. The Department of Health and Human Services aims to increase prenatal care access by 2030. However, only six percent of women who give birth receive little or no prenatal care. According to statistics, most pregnant women may be subjected to as many as 15 prenatal visits and still more tests and procedures throughout their pregnancies. Although prenatal visits are meant to improve outcomes, there's little evidence that more prenatal intervention is better as these appointments often involve possibly detrimental invasive and high-tech testing and procedures. Pregnant women also get tested for Group B strep and are given antibiotics that can increase their babies' risks of thrush, yeast infections and antibiotic-resistant infections.
