Academics received money from Epstein even after the late sex offender's pedophilia conviction
Two academics
reportedly received money from the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein even after his conviction for pedophilia in 2008. Epstein died while in custody in 2019.
According to the
Wall Street Journal (WSJ), linguist Noam Chomsky received $270,000 while Leon Botstein, the president of
Bard College in New York state, received $150,000 from the late financier. Both academics confirmed receiving the money and meeting multiple times with Epstein.
Chomsky told
WSJ that he and Epstein met to discuss political and academic topics. On the issue of the money, the linguist claimed the transfer involved his own funds connected to his late wife. He told the
Daily Mail that both the money transfer and his relationship with Epstein after his conviction were "
completely public for many years." (Related:

Meanwhile, Botstein said he received checks from an account linked to Epstein in 2016. The money was given to the school that same year as part of a more than $1 million donation. A spokesman for Bard confirmed the donation, adding that it was Botstein's compensation for working on an advisory board for the charity foundation Gratitude America – which Epstein created in 2012.
The Bard president previously told the
WSJ that Epstein gave the school $75,000 in unsolicited donations in 2011. He later claimed not remembering the 2016 payments until asked by the outlet, since they didn't appear as donations from Epstein in the school records. Botstein also admitted to meeting with Epstein more than a dozen times to raise funds, but was unsuccessful.
Donations to schools reportedly an attempt to rehabilitate Epstein's image
The donations given by Epstein to Chomsky and Botstein appear to be an attempt by the convicted sex offender to rehabilitate his tarnished image.
Chomsky, a professor at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, claimed that the financier was simply helping him rearrange his own funds after being asked for help with a "technical matter." He also argued that in civilized societies, a person who has served a sentence returns to society without prejudice.
"The simplest way seemed to be to transfer funds from one account in my name to another, by way of his office," said Chomsky. "These are all personal matters of no one's concern."
Botstein also alleged what while Epstein named him as a consultant and paid fees for his alleged work at Gratitude America, he never actually worked there. He told the
WSJ that the late convicted sex offender did not want to write a check to the school, so Epstein instead "
concocted this scheme."
"He took pity on me and he said, 'I'm gonna give you money and you do whatever you want with it,'" Botstein added.
Epstein pleaded guilty to charges of soliciting prostitution from a minor and was registered as a sex offender in 2008. In 2019, federal prosecutors charged him with sex trafficking a minor and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking. Epstein denied the charges and was refused bail before he died in August 2019 in an apparent suicide.
"Botstein's 2016 total philanthropic contribution to Bard was $1.04 million," the Bard spokesman commented. "Had the extent and horror of Epstein's crimes been known, Bard would not have accepted his support."
