House passes bill to block Biden from banning gas stoves as Republicans push back against anti-fossil fuel policies
The House of Representatives passes a bill to prevent President Joe Biden from
banning gas stoves as Republicans continue to push back against anti-fossil fuel policies.
On Tuesday, June 13, lawmakers passed H.R. 1615, also known as the "
Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act," primarily sponsored by Republican Rep. Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota. The bill prohibits the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) from executing any kind of federal ban on gas stoves.
According to
Politico, the
bill passed by a 248-180 vote, with 29 Democrats crossing the aisle to support H.R. 1615, which also prevents the CPSC from spending taxpayer dollars to enforce any consumer safety standard that would effectively remove gas stoves from the market or significantly increase their prices.
"We know the motivation of the CPSC and throughout this entire administration is
a green climate push," Armstrong said. "The goal is to dictate how you live every aspect of your life – how you save and invest for the future by pushing ESG [environmental, social and governance] factors, how you drive by banning gas-powered cars, and now the goal is to control how you cook."
House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana echoed Armstrong's sentiments in his own statement, arguing that the government is trying to tell Americans "what kind of stove you have to operate in your home" by forcing people to pick less efficient and costlier cooking options. "We're pushing back against that," he said.
This came after conservatives in Congress blocked a procedural measure setting up consideration of the legislation as they were frustrated by Speaker Kevin McCarthy's deal with the White House on the debt ceiling issue. McCarthy and the GOP were later able to reach an agreement to advance the bill.
"This week, we will hold the Biden administration accountable by standing up for the American people to stop the outrageous and really insane ban on gas stoves – a bad idea that started in New York that is now being embraced by every Democrat and the Biden administration," said Republican Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York in a statement on the day the bill passed.
The bill now heads to the Senate, but analysts note that it is unlikely to pass due to the Democratic Party's control of the upper house.
Stove wars: Power grabbing moves by the Biden regime and Left cult
Though gas stoves have not been banned either by legislation or executive order, CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. noted in January that "any option is on the table" regarding a possible federal ban, claiming that the gas stoves are strongly associated with
poor indoor air quality and health harms such as asthma.
The debate over gas stoves was reignited in recent weeks when the
Department of Energy proposed a rule requiring both gas and electric stoves and cooktops to use more efficient designs and technologies. Though not yet finalized, the rule could ban about half of all gas stove models currently sold in the U.S. by 2027. This would apply only to the sale of new appliances and would not affect stoves already in homes or businesses.
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington state called the plan "just the latest in a long line of power grabs by the
radical left and Biden administration" and not about public safety.
"It is about telling the American people the federal government knows best and will decide what kind of car they can drive, how they can heat their house, and now how they're allowed to cook food for their families," McMorris Rodgers said.
Dozens of Democratic-controlled cities, including San Francisco and Berkeley in California, have already banned new buildings from using gas stoves as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In New York, the state approved a law last month that bans natural gas stoves and furnaces in newer buildings. (Related:
