Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to resolve a five-year investigation into his failure to pay approximately $1 million in federal taxes in 2018. The agreement, detailed in a filing in federal court in Delaware on Tuesday, June 20, includes Biden pleading guilty to a pair of misdemeanor tax charges. In addition to the tax charges, Hunter Biden was accused of unlawfully owning a firearm while being addicted to a controlled substance in October 2018. For this charge, he has entered into a pretrial diversion agreement, which offers an alternative to prosecution, potentially allowing defendants to avoid prison time or a criminal conviction. (Related: MSNBC forced to admit Hunter Biden will be CHARGED for multiple felonies.) The plea agreement, which requires approval from a federal judge, stipulates that Hunter Biden will likely avoid serving time in prison if he adheres to the release conditions. Both sides of the agreement will recommend that he be placed on probation. The investigation, overseen by U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss, began during the Trump administration and continued after President Joe Biden took office.  The agreement also seeks to comprehensively address Hunter Biden's legal liability regarding all matters investigated by federal authorities, including allegations of corruption or violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act about his business dealings and role on the Ukrainian energy company Burisma board. Christopher Clark, Hunter Biden's attorney, said: "It is my understanding that the five-year investigation into Hunter is resolved. I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward." Hunter Biden could face 12-18 months for the tax charges, with the possibility of spending half of that time in prison, according to sentencing expert Tess Lopez. However, experts believe the odds of him being sentenced to jail are low due to factors such as the tax loss amount, his status as a first-time offender, and his willingness to accept responsibility for his actions.

Republicans cry foul on Hunter Biden's plea agreement

The plea deal received criticism from Republicans, who viewed it as a lenient outcome for the president's son. Although the plea agreement focuses on the tax charges and the gun issue, Republicans have long scrutinized Hunter Biden's activities, including his business dealings in Ukraine and the contents of a laptop allegedly left at a Delaware repair shop. Former President Donald Trump also voiced his disapproval of the deal. "Wow! The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden a mere 'traffic ticket.' Our system is BROKEN!" he posted on his Truth Social platform. Calls for a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden have been made by Republicans, but Attorney General Merrick Garland allowed Weiss to continue overseeing the investigation. Rep. James Comer, the Republican chair of the House Oversight Committee, vowed that Garland's decision to ignore their calls will not affect his panel's work.
