Christian teacher in the U.K. FIRED for refusing to affirm LGBT ideology

A Christian teacher in the United Kingdom has been terminated from her post for her refusal to affirm LGBT ideology pushed by the school she works at. Glawdys Leger was fired by the Bishop Justus Church of England School in the London borough of Bromley in May 2022. The 43-year-old modern languages teacher cited her refusal to teach "extreme" LGBT lessons – which is anathema to her Christian faith – as a reason for her sacking. Leger added that her sharing of her Christian beliefs in the classroom also contributed to her termination. The 43-year-old had objected to the content of Year 7 lessons, which had been incorporated into religious education (RE) classes. Year 7 in the British school system roughly corresponds to the sixth grade in the U.S. education system. According to the Christian Legal Center (CLC), the lesson materials that Leger opposed included "extreme content on gender identity with themes that begin to suggest to children that humans can be born in the wrong body." They also introduced fake gender identities such as pansexual, asexual, intersex and transgender. The lessons also encouraged children to be "allies of the queer community." During a discussion on LGBT issues, Leger also told pupils in her class that God made humans male and female, and expressed belief that LGBT practice was sinful. She had "also grown increasingly alarmed by the promotion and acceptance of abortion and Critical Race Theory within the school," the CLC added. One material brought up by the teacher included the slogan "Equality is a strength, diversity is our power, inclusion is a necessity" – which was reminiscent of the novel "Animal Farm" by George Orwell.

Leger "treated like a criminal" for being an "ally of God"

The CLC said Leger had raised her conscientious objection about the RE lesson content, but her concerns were merely "brushed aside and ignored." The Aquinas Church of England Education Trust (Aquinas Trust), which oversees the school, reported her to the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) following a complaint. The TRA is under the British Department for Education (DfE). The agency held a "fitness to practice" hearing on Oct. 9, with the CLC representing Leger. If the TRA rules against her, she could be removed from the list of licensed teachers and be permanently barred from teaching. A spokesman for the Aquinas Trust refused to further comment on the issue outside a statement that said: "Delivering a high-quality education and supporting the wellbeing of students is our top priority." "To ensure this is achieved, we promote fundamental British values including mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. The school teaches in line with statutory requirements to promote British values and follows relevant guidance outlined by the DfE." A spokesperson for the Church of England also refused to comment further as doing so "would not be appropriate." They nevertheless emphasized that "schools are bound by the Equalities Act, which assures that all children and adults are treated with respect regardless of their faith, gender or sexuality." "I was treated like a criminal and as though I was a danger for expressing my Christian beliefs," lamented Leger. "I have great compassion for LGBT people, especially for those suffering from gender confusion." "I cannot, however, in good conscience teach or say things I believe are contrary to my faith, for example saying that same-sex sexual relationships are good and/or affirming people in their gender confusion. I am certain that I have not shown, and never would show, any hatred or lack of love towards LGBT people." The beleaguered teacher also denounced the school for "compelling teachers to promote, teach and celebrate" the LGBT agenda. "For Christians, it is important to remain an ally of God rather than being an ally of things that are against [His] laws and commandments," she said.
