Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) has walked back on his stance in support of abortion up to the full term of pregnancy following strong backlash. The nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy earlier remarked during a podcast interview: "I believe we should leave [the matter of abortion] to the woman. We shouldn't have the government involved … even if it's full term." RFK Jr.'s comments came as a surprise even to his running mate, lawyer Nicole Shanahan. But following those remarks, the candidate took to X to clarify his stance. In a lengthy social media post on the Elon Musk-owned platform, RFK Jr. said he would allow abortion only "up until a certain number of weeks." He explained that he had assumed that virtually all late-term abortions were due to potentially fatal or catastrophic health-related complications. "I've learned that my assumption was wrong; sometimes, women abort healthy, viable late-term fetuses. These cases of purely 'elective' late-term abortion are very upsetting. Once the baby is viable outside the womb, it should have rights and it deserves society's protection," the independent candidate wrote. "I support the emerging consensus that abortion should be unrestricted up until a certain point – [and] I believe that point should be when the baby is viable outside the womb. Therefore, I would allow appropriate restrictions on abortion in the final months of pregnancy, just as Roe v. Wade did. [Ultimately], we should be looking at why there are so many abortions in the first place." But several users chided RFK Jr. over his earlier remarks and support of full-term abortion. The @catturd2 account on X denounced him as a "liar" and a "fraud." "You just said you'd support full-term abortions," the account replied. "Surprise, another far-left hack who lies every time he opens his mouth for votes." Trump: RFK Jr. "more radical" than Biden

Former President Donald Trump, the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for president, has a different approach to the matter. In April, he remarked that abortion laws should be left for individual states to decide. However, Trump also reiterated that he backed exceptions for rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother. The real estate mogul previously signaled support for an abortion ban beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy. But he later walked back on this ban, saying political considerations were paramount in the first post-Roe presidential election. Trump also doubled down in denouncing RFK Jr. as a plant to undermine his presidential campaign. "A lot of people think [RFK Jr.] is a conservative – he's not. He's more liberal than anybody running on the Democratic side," the former president said. Trump described the independent candidate as "a Democrat plant" and "a radical left liberal who has been put in place in order to help Biden, the worst president in the history of the U.S., get reelected." "A vote for [RFK Jr.] would essentially be a wasted protest vote that could swing either way, but would only swing against the Democrats if the Republicans knew the real story about him. Republicans, get it out of your mind that you're going to vote for this guy because he's conservative – he's not. I'd even take Biden over [him] because our country would last about a year or two longer than it would with [RFK Jr.]."
