A United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) official has revealed that children have been widely affected by the intensified Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon in the last two months. In a press conference in Geneva on Nov. 19, James Elder, a spokesperson for UNICEF, revealed that the extensive Israeli bombing campaigns targeting Hezbollah strongholds have resulted in widespread casualties and devastation. These Israeli strikes, which started in September, resulted in the killing of more than 200 children in Lebanon. (Related: Israel kills Hezbollah spokesman Mohammed Afif in Beirut airstrike.) On Nov. 10, seven children were killed from the same extended family. The family of 27, all killed, was seeking shelter in Mount Lebanon after fleeing violence in the south. The following day, two more children were killed with their mother. Thirteen children were killed during a Nov. 12 strike, while four children were killed on Nov. 13 and three more on Nov. 14. On Nov. 16, five children were killed, including three from the same family. Among the injured is Celine Haidar, a young football player in the National Lebanese team. She is in a coma due to a shrapnel in her head coming from a missile that hit Beirut while she was trying to flee the area. And on Nov. 17, two four-year-old twin girls were killed. "Over the past two months, more than three children have been killed in Lebanon, on average, every day," Elder told reporters. Aside from the killings, Elder said over 1,100 children have been injured during the escalation in the last two months, with many left physically and emotionally scarred.

Situation of children in Lebanon and Gaza Strip has "chilling similarities"

During the press conference, Elder also revealed the "chilling similarities" between the situation of the children in Lebanon and the enslaved Gaza Strip. For example, hundreds of thousands of children in Lebanon and Gaza have been displaced due to relentless attacks. The disproportionate attacks have frequently hit infrastructure, including medical facilities and schools that children rely on. Efforts to reopen schools have been thwarted by the ongoing violence, leaving children without access to education. The conflict has had a severe psychological impact on children in Lebanon and Gaza, with signs of emotional distress becoming increasingly apparent. Additionally, the disturbing and rising child casualties have failed to prompt meaningful action from those in positions of influence. "In Lebanon, much the same as has become the case in Gaza, the intolerable is quietly transforming into the acceptable. And the appalling is slipping into the realm of the expected," Elder said. "And once more, the cries of children go unheard, the world's silence grows deafening and again we allow the unimaginable to become the landscape of childhood. A horrific and unacceptable new normal." Head over to Fallout.news for more stories like this.
