  • Senior Russian diplomat Rodion Miroshnik has accused Ukraine of committing "language-based genocide," citing alleged orders for troops to kill Russian speakers in Kursk.
  • The allegations come after the discovery of seven bodies in Russkoye Porechnoye. The bodies showed signs that they were tortured, sparking outrage and a Russian government investigation into alleged Ukrainian terrorism.
  • Russian officials have condemned the incident as a massacre and accused Ukraine of embodying terrorism and neo-Nazism.
  • Moscow is warning of escalating rhetoric from Ukraine that could lead to the elimination of more Russian speakers.
A senior Russian diplomat has accused Ukraine of committing "language-based genocide" following the discovery of civilian bodies in a recently recaptured village in Russia's Kursk Region. Rodion Miroshnik, a Russian Foreign Ministry official tasked with documenting alleged Ukrainian war crimes, claimed on Sunday, Jan. 19, that captured Ukrainian soldiers reported being ordered to kill Russian speakers. Miroshnik, born in Luhansk when it was part of Soviet Ukraine, is a Ukrainian national whose first language is Russian. Miroshnik supported the Moscow-backed separatists in Luhansk when it declared independence from Kyiv, and has since worked as a diplomat, first for the breakaway state and currently for the Kremlin. He currently holds the title of "ambassador-at-large for the crimes of the Kyiv regime." (Related: Ukraine ends transportation of Russian gas to Europe through its territory, putting several EU nations at risk of shortages.) The allegations against Ukraine come as Russian authorities investigate the deaths of seven civilians found in the village of Russkoye Porechnoye, which had been under Ukrainian control since late August. The discovery of the bodies, described as bound, beaten and in some cases killed with explosives, has sparked outrage in Moscow. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the incident as evidence of a "massacre" and accused the Ukrainian government of embodying a "terrorist and neo-Nazi essence." She also criticized Western nations for allegedly turning a blind eye to Kyiv's actions.

Russia probes Ukrainian armed forces over allegations of terrorism

The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a probe into the Ukrainian armed forces for allegations of terrorism, a charge that carries a potential life sentence in Russia. The investigation follows the release of footage by a Telegram channel associated with Russian forces, showing the discovery of heavily decomposed bodies in two cellars. Most victims were elderly, suggesting they were unable to flee during the fighting. Miroshnik's claims of "language-based genocide" mark a significant escalation in Russia's rhetoric against Ukraine. He argued that the alleged orders to kill Russian speakers amount to the "elimination of all civilians" in areas contested by both nations. The village of Russkoye Porechnoye, located near the Ukrainian border, was captured by Ukrainian forces in late August during Kyiv's incursion into Kursk. It was recaptured by Russian troops recently. The discovery of the bodies has reignited tensions in a conflict that shows no signs of abating. Zakharova vowed that Russia would pursue justice independently if international bodies fail to act. "In the absence of action by relevant international bodies, Russia will pursue justice on its own," she said. Meanwhile, local authorities in Kursk Region have reported over 1,100 people missing since the start of the Ukrainian incursion, with only 240 located so far, and many of the missing persons feared dead.
