New York City Mayor Eric Adams claims the Democratic Party
has abandoned both him and working-class Americans.
Adams made this claim during a recent interview with former
Fox News host Tucker Carlson, during which Adams discussed how he believes the Democratic Party has strayed from its roots and in the process left behind the very people it once claimed to represent.
"People often say, 'You don't sound like a Democrat. You seem to have left the party,'" Adams told Carlson. "No, the party left me, and it left working-class people."
Adams' comments come amid a tumultuous period in his political career. In September, the mayor was indicted on charges of bribery and corruption amid accusations that he accepted illegal campaign contributions and luxury international travel as gifts from foreign businesspeople, including a Turkish government official. The indictment alleges that Adams not only accepted these improper benefits but actively sought them out during his 2021 mayoral campaign. (Related:

The mayor has vehemently denied the allegations, pleading not guilty to all charges. However, he has suggested that his legal troubles are tied to his outspoken criticism of how the administration of former President Joe Biden handled the illegal immigration crisis and how it affected New York City.
Adams one of few Dems willing to criticize Biden's handling of migrant crisis
Adams claims that his decision to speak out against the surge of migrants into New York City – a crisis that has cost the city $6.5 billion in housing, food and other resources – made him a target within his own party.
"Those who push back on the norm within the Democratic Party get demonized," Adams said during the interview. He went further, alleging that individuals within Biden’s Justice Department viewed him as "
not a good Democrat" after he raised concerns about the impact of illegal immigration on New York City.
The mayor's frustration with his party's leadership has led him to seek support from President Donald Trump. Just days before Trump's second inauguration, Adams traveled to Florida to meet with the Republican leader. The meeting, described by Adams as a "productive conversation,"
focused on New York City's needs and how the federal government could assist in improving the lives of its residents.
While Adams insists that his legal troubles were not discussed during the meeting, speculation from critics has swirled that the mayor is seeking a presidential pardon from Trump.
Adams' decision to attend Trump's inauguration instead of participating in Martin Luther King Jr. Day events in New York drew sharp criticism from some local leaders. State Sen. Zellnor Myrie (D-Brooklyn) accused Adams of prioritizing his own exoneration over the city's well-being, while New York City Comptroller Brad Lander questioned why the mayor couldn't apply the same focus to addressing crime and the cost of living.
In response, Adams defended his attendance at Trump's swearing-in ceremony as a "sacred American tradition," emphasizing the need to put partisan politics aside for the good of the country.
