A report from news outlet Mediaite indicates that 2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is planning to run as an independent. Mediaite reported that Kennedy is planning to announce his run as an independent on Oct. 9 in Pennsylvania, and that his campaign is now planning "attack ads" against the Democratic National Committee (DNC). These ads will be run the days preceding Oct. 9 to "pave the way" for his announcement in Philadelphia about running as an independent. (Related: Survey: 33% of Democrats to vote for RFK Jr. if he runs independently – DNC headed for PANIC.) Kennedy, 69, also posted a video on YouTube on Friday, Sept. 29, asking his supporters to join him in Philadelphia on Oct. 9 for a "major announcement." "I'll be speaking about a sea of change in American politics," he said as he decried the corruption in both the Democratic and Republican parties. "How are we going to win against the established Washington interests?" he asked, adding that it is "not through playing the game" by the current rules.

DNC rules specifically crafted to prevent RFK Jr. from challenging Biden

A campaign insider for the Kennedy camp informed Mediaite that the DNC had been using internal party rules to prevent Kennedy from properly participating in the Democratic primaries. "Bobby feels that the DNC is changing the rules to exclude his candidacy, so an independent run is the only way to go," said the campaign insider. Since beginning his run to challenge the incumbency of President Joe Biden, Kennedy has protested how the Democratic Party has "essentially merged into one unit" with the Biden 2024 campaign, denying him a fair shot in the primaries. "If any candidate sets foot in the state of Iowa or New Hampshire, none of the votes that are cast for that candidate will be tallied," Kennedy alleged during an interview. He added that the DNC has even considered creating new rules that would nullify all votes cast for him in other states like Georgia if he campaigns in New Hampshire. "In other words, any delegate that I win in New Hampshire or Iowa would go instead to the president," he said. "And now they're trying to change it so that if I campaign in New Hampshire that none of the votes cast for me in Georgia will count. That's significant because it 's hard to win the nomination without Georgia." Polling indicates that Kennedy is performing relatively well against Biden in the Democratic primary, especially when taking into account that he is challenging an incumbent president. However, this same polling notes that he may not be able to garner enough votes and delegates to mount a strong challenge against the president by August 2024 when the Democratic National Convention meets. But this does not mean that Kennedy does not pose a threat to Biden. Democrats have expressed concerns that any third-party bid could draw votes away from Biden and help re-elect former President Donald Trump, the GOP's presumed nominee for 2024.
